Haven of Hope Sanctuary is built upon more than five years of direct, hands-on experience providing specialized care, rehabilitation, and management for donkeys with a wide range of behavioral, medical, and physical needs. Through this experience, Carla and Brian McCarthy have developed the knowledge and practical skills necessary to rehabilitate vulnerable donkeys and provide safe, humane, and appropriate long-term care. Through patient handling, trust-based training, proper nutrition, veterinary care, and consistent management practices, the founders successfully rehabilitated four donkeys, resulting in healthy, socialized animals capable of safe interaction with people and other animals. These experiences demonstrate both the resilience of donkeys and the importance of specialized rescue and rehabilitation services tailored to their needs.
Building a Legacy of Compassion

Meet Our Founding Residents

Walter
Once a fearful mini sold for pennies, Walter arrived feral with neglected hooves. With love and patience, little by little he gained our trust, blossoming into one of the sweetest donkeys in our herd and a truly cherished resident.

Sam
Sam is a brave spirit who overcame a past of severe neglect. Once fearful and wild, he now thrives on affection and play. He joyfully brays for attention the moment he spots his human or canine friends.

Lola & Luca
This adorable duo came to us when Luca was only 2 weeks old. Lola gave birth alone in the woods. She was so skinny at the time that no one even knew she was pregnant, and she was about to be surrendered to slaughter. Today, they are inseparable and the sweetest, most sociable pair in the herd.
